Going Green
All Levels
The materials I use to teach art and the ways they come into my possession are changing reatly over time. My experiences as an adult college student are
providing me with an awareness of
environmental and school budget
issues, especially in the arts. I see the
fight to keep the arts in the classroom,
and the creative and frugal methods
art educator’s use to teach art to students. When designing creative inter-

disciplinary lesson plans for multiple
age groups, I consider all the things
that can be recycled into useful art
supplies. Due to their unique beauty,
one of the things I began to think
about was old computer parts.
Collecting Parts
In looking at the interesting shapes
and sizes of old computer parts, creat-
ing robots quickly came to mind. For
six months I hunted down old comput-
ers and for as many months took apart
every screw and clip that held them
together. As the parts slowly accumu-
lated, I organized them into contain-
ers. I separated the hazardous parts
and delivered those to a local com-
puter recycling place. I also removed
the large plastic and metal casings and
took them to the regular recycling
centers. I collected cardboard to serve
as background bases, and then I was
ready to start!
