Murals
Matt Wight, principal of Apex High School, didn’t understand why my Art I students had covered the wall from floor to ceiling with sticky
notes. Up close it was a mass of colorful squares.
He turned his back and continued making his
rounds down the long hallway. When Mr. Wight
turned around, he was amazed. Like pixels on
a computer screen, all the sticky-note squares
blended to form an image. On the wall was a
portrait of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow
from the film Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Sticky-Note Campaign
The complexity of this project evolved over
the course of several semesters. Our earliest
attempts at sticky-note art were designed on
graph paper and the murals were simple pixel
images of computer game characters.
