Picturing the Natural Environment
Rebecca Walker, grade five, Manchester
G.A. T.E. Elementary School.
Iwatched as children sat in a semicircle by the edge of the San Joaquin River. As a docent shared her knowledge about the riparian habitat of this river, there was a
big splash in the water. A fish had
jumped, snapping up a meal from the
surface. As the ripples broadened and
smoothed out, students began to study
the tile designs attached to the concrete stools on which they had been
sitting. Each tile displayed an image of
a particular fish that inhabits central
California’s main river. Students tried
to identify the leaping fish on one
of the nine handmade art creations
attached to the stools.
