Art studio experiences can meaningfully integrate multiple curricular dis- cipline areas. Through
a study of public visual expression,
from historic labyrinths to contempo-
rary graffiti, connections can be made
to art forms related to spiritual realms
and ceremonial rituals. Such activi-
ties can also serve as a springboard for
writing.
Exploring Public Visual Expression
Students began with a discussion of
the human need to make marks to
communicate and for art to have a
place to exist within the collective
space of our everyday lives. They
learned about labyrinths and other
historic public visual expressions.
They also reflected on how communi-
ties reserve walls for public murals
and establish spaces for poetry and
writing on subways and trains.
