3. Use other colors of oil pastels to
fill in the rectangles, composing
a Rothko-like piece, blending and
smearing some colors to experiment with color mixing. Students
were encouraged to express their
individuality and their emotions.
4. Brush a little water over the sections that need more blending.
Students were cautioned not to
scrub too much, so as not to make
“mud” with their colors. Dab up
puddles with tissue.
5. Dry the pieces with a hair dryer
and attach an adhesive sawtooth
hanger to the back of each piece.
The resulting artworks were colorful and balanced. The students felt
like they could have fun with the
materials while creating an abstract
expressionist piece without the pressure of trying to do realistic work.
