As we walk through this incredible journey of teaching, one of the greatest gifts we receive is the
memory of the incredible and unique faces that
pass through our doors—some round, some freckled, some full of life, and some a little sleepy.
When it comes to portraiture, as adults, we have many
wonderful experiences and resources from which to create innovative and dynamic works of art. It is important to
remember that students don’t always have these skills and
experiences. It is up to you to provide in-depth prompts to
inspire your students to master their technique, as well as the
unique storytelling skills a portrait should provide.

an unusual object to create a unique portrait. Top

composition makes this artwork one of a kind. Bottom left: With innovative use of color and composition,
this student successfully creates a portrait that draws
the viewer in. Bottom right: Dramatic foreshortening
draws the viewer into an emotionally striking portrait.
