Environmental awareness,
going green, recycle, fuel efficiency . . . these terms whirl
around our students every
day; but do they hear them? The
answer motivated us as teachers to
incorporate environmental awareness
into an art curriculum as a valuable
and exciting project.
Encouraging Awareness
tography class was to encourage students to become aware and appreciate
their own environment, even in their
own back yard. In their town of Port
Washington, Long Island, there are
waterfronts, nature preserves, and an
abundance of parks kept for them by
a community that cares for the environment. The students’ challenge was
to recognize these efforts and make a
visual record of those special places.
Every student was required to ven-
ture into a space they felt attached to
and collect hand-sized objects from
that location. Objects such as rocks,
shells, leaves, and even trash were
collected and brought to the classroom. Some students were drawn to
places like their local park or even
the train station in town.
