Gregory J. Barry, Teacher
Pencil drawings are the
foundations of my early art
experiences. Although I
have used various media in
my teaching and personal
artwork, graphite contin-
ues to energize my use of
fine line, shape, value, and
texture. My compositions
capture and depict the narratives of still life from the sig-
nificant belongings of my ancestor’s daily touch. Objects
range from tools used to earn a living, to possessions
of time, place, and faith. Through visual narrative as a
means of remembrance, my
art is a personal tribute to
my heritage.

It has taught me to
embrace challenges,
because after all, what
is art but another form
of adventure to push
the limits of imagi-
nation? My work has always focused on capturing the
little details with an emphasis on realism. My intention
with all of my pieces is to capture the viewer’s attention
and inspire deeper introspection of the world around
the viewer. My projects do not just “pop” into my head.
Yunxi Fan, Student
Art is my getaway.
Rather, I get an urge to capture a
moment as I encounter it. Art is
spontaneous, and ideas are always
fresh and surprising; there is always
something new when you are an
artist.
