Elementary Studio Lesson
Alessandra Weaver (“Ali”), grade four.
Line, shape, color, value, contrast, media,
technology, technique, flat, transparent,
opaque, rhythm, pattern, sgraffito, culture,
creativity, background, foreground, masks,
texture, warm colors, cool colors, mood, balance,
artistry, expression, unity. All of these ideas were
revisited in one way or another when the images
you see here were created by my fourth graders.
In Massachusetts, the Arts Curriculum Framework is aligned with national standards, and fourth
grade is a year when exit criteria are defined in the
arts. This lesson is an excellent visual assessment
of student learning of the terms listed above, each
one having been previously taught in the years
leading up to fourth grade. This lesson also provides students a way to creatively respond to their
I prepare for this lesson while students are working
on another project. I call them up by table to take
their individual photographs. They stand by a window so that shadows are cast. I import the images
to my computer and print one copy of each photo.
