InSEA believes that learning through art is an
important way to promote international understanding and cultural cooperation. Its members
seek new ways to develop understanding of the
role of the arts in shaping world cultures and the
ways in which learning in the arts can provide
insight into better ways of living together in peace
and understanding. InSEA promotes, through its
world membership, the sharing of experiences in
order to improve practices and strengthen the position of art in relation to all of education and the
cultural life of communities on a worldwide basis.
InSEA’s Activities
In March 2006, InSEA hosted a world congress
in Viseu, Portugal. In attendance were the
presidents of the International Drama/Theatre
Education Association (IDEA) and the International Music Education Association (ISME). With
representatives from these associations, InSEA
prepared an agreement resulting in the formation
of the International Alliance of Arts Education
Associations. This was an historic achievement
resulting in the formation of a powerful body of
arts educators numbering more than one million
delegates worldwide.
InSEA executive members also attended the
inaugural UNESCO Arts Education summit
in Portugal. At this congress, attended by more
than two thousand delegates from two hundred
countries, UNESCO unveiled the policy document Road Map for the Future of Arts Education.
This document, containing policy directions that
impact teachers of the arts at all levels of education, will potentially impact all one hundred and
ninety eight UNESCO member states. As part
of its role in the new alliance, InSEA has been
actively involved in responding to this policy initiative at UNESCO’s invitation.
In 2007, InSEA hosted a European research conference in Heidelberg, Germany; a South American
regional congress in Bogota, Colombia; and a two
part Asian regional congress in Seoul, Korea. In
2008, we look forward to an exciting World congress in Japan.
InSEA now boasts an important new journal—
the International Journal of Education through
Art, edited by Rachel Mason—and provides three
issues per year to members. This journal is committed to exploring international issues and
research in art education.
