Folk Art Traditions and Beyond
Travel with SchoolArts to Santa Fe, New Mexico in July 2008.
The best folk art and artists from around the world
together in one place, Georgia O’Keeffe’s museum and
Abiquiu home, green chiles and blue
cornbread—what else could anyone
ask for in art teacher heaven?
Join SchoolArts editor Nancy
Walkup in Santa Fe, New Mexico,
July 8– 14, 2008, for Folk Art Traditions and Beyond. This summer
seminar will focus on the fifth
annual Folk Art Festival at the
Museum of International Folk Art in
Santa Fe, with additional emphasis
on Georgia O’Keeffe’s life and art
in New Mexico, and Hispanic and
Native American cultural traditions.
Folk Art Market
The Santa Fe International Folk
Art Market is a unique open-air
gathering of master folk artists from
over forty countries in celebration
of creativity and humanity, promoting international cooperation and
understanding through art and culture. The event, which helps artists
and craftspeople achieve economic
sustainability and preserve their
heritage, provides an opportunity to
meet artists and buy their high-quality, authentic work. Attending this gathering is like seeing the
world in a weekend. Last summer
over 113 booths represented more
than 150 artists from forty-one
countries and 12,000 attendees.
Activities include museum visits,
field trips, invited speakers, hands-on experiences, and attendance at
the International Folk Art Festival
at the Museum of International Folk
Art in Santa Fe. Highlights include
visits to Georgia O’Keeffe’s home,
Ghost Ranch in Albiquiu, and a
sister conference center to Ghost
Ranch in Santa Fe for photography,
sketching, or painting. We’ll have
the opportunity to do photography,
sketching, and painting, as well as
learn about Pueblo cultural traditions from Taos native John Reyna.
The $775 fee includes six nights
of accommodations at Ghost Ranch
in Santa Fe, most meals, field trips,
transportation for field trips, admission fees, and seminar materials.
Commuters may also attend; the
cost without lodging is $450. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from Santa Fe. There are
shuttles available from the Albuquerque airport to Santa Fe (www.
sandiashuttle.com, www.shuttlesan-tafe.com).
The seminar will be led by two
folk art collectors and educators:
Nancy Walkup, art teacher and editor of SchoolArts magazine; and
Myra Walker, art professor at the
University of North Texas. For more

A Participant Speaks
“Every day was an adventure.
Just enough information and
hands-on activity for take-home
examples. Loved the personal
shrine making and glad we could
add and work on it during the
week. John Reyna [from Taos
Pueblo] was fantastic—such an
interesting person who shared a
piece of his soul and heart with
us. The Folk Art Festival was
amazing! This has been one of
the very best workshops I have
ever taken! I will hold the memories close to my heart!”
