M I D D L E S C H O O L I n 2014, I transitioned my classroom from a teacher-directed environment to a student-driven studio. I encour - age students to choose both what they create and what they use to create. Now, at any given time in my classroom, one student may be working on a film while another is sculpting with clay. I have come to love the variety of materials my students select and the different ideas they come up with as they interpret issues that are important to them. One challenge I have faced since embracing this approach is how to give students quality experiences with media prior to them making the choices of what materials to select.
