36 MAY 2018 SchoolArts E L E M E N T A R Y E very year, I take my fourth- graders on a field trip to view the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC). I pre- pare them for the trip while helping them form joyful connections to the artworks. One preparatory method involves playing a game based on the images they will see at the AIC. Modified from a presentation that I attended at an NAEA conference, I call the game "Spect-ART-acles." Planning for Spect-ART-acles To begin, I purchased dollar store plastic sunglasses. Lenses were removed before I hot-glued a craft stick across the top bar of each pair of glasses and affixed a piece of Velcro to the center of the stick. Next, an assortment of art post- cards from the AIC gift shop were laminated and a piece of Velcro was glued on the lower back side so the postcard could attach to the glasses. Finally, answer sheets were made, SPECT- ART -ACLES Tricia Fuglestad Students ask questions to identify the mystery art piece they are wearing.
