A fter more than twenty years as an art educator, I taught paint - ing for the first time this year. I wanted to introduce more diverse artists into my curriculum, and was inspired to base a lesson on the work of Romare Bearden, one of my favorite artists, after visiting the Whitney Museum of American Art. The museum's first-ever exhibition featured Bearden's Eastern Barn. Here was an artist who used collage in cre - ative ways, ranging from fine details to large, uniformly colored areas. None of my students were familiar with Bearden's work or the work of other African Americans before this lesson.
