R ecently, there's been a Little Library trend popping up across the U.S. to promote the love of reading. Little Libraries are curbside boxes built within a commu - nity as a free book exchange to share k nowledge and enjoyment within the pages of books. Since its inception in Wisconsin in 2009, as many as 40,000 Little Libraries have sprouted across the globe. These small structures at some locations are discreet wooden Art Club Takes Charge Our elementary school's sixth-grade art club ambitiously took charge. They were especially excited to com- plete this task because they wanted t o leave a significant contribution before they were promoted to mid- dle school. As we discussed the pos- sibilities of what could be painted on t he Little Library, contemporary artist Johnathan Green came to mind. As a native South Carolinian artist, Green is a local treasure who celebrates his roots. We decided to follow his inspi - ration and style, in, on, and around o ur Little Library, making it a unique and personal tribute to the Lowcoun- try. We then set forth to research this l ocal contemporary artist. Artist Jonathan Green The South Carolina Lowcounty is a community along the Atlantic Coast E L E M E N T A R Y A LITTLE Erin Russell and Tracey Hunter-Doniger cubes, while at other locations they are elaborately decorated, celebrating the community in which they reside. This past spring, our school was chosen to paint one of these struc- tures in a neighborhood as a collabo- ration with the College of Charleston in South Carolina. We were excited for this opportunity, as we were given the task to represent our com- munity and the people who live, work, play, and make art here.
