E L E M E N T A R Y WORLD OUT OF THIS Jennifer Hartman C ommunity is something that I've always valued in my art- room. I always began each year with activities that encouraged students to get to know one another and instill a sense of belonging. Then, when I transitioned from teaching middle school to elementary, it was suddenly more difficult to develop the same sense of community. I found that in the elementary artroom, our time together was short and spaced far apart, making the traditional get- to-know-you activities cumbersome. In addition, my classes are often large, composed of students from multiple homerooms who may not interact with one another outside of Pecan Creek Elementary students collaborated to plan, sketch, and assemble the school's Out of This World mural. 32 NOVEMBER 2017 SchoolArts
