length of 18th Street from Cypress Avenue to Mediterranean Avenue. Symbol Significance To join this group, my third- to fifth- grade students created mural designs from symbols they believed were sig- nificant to the community in which we live. This was my second year working with the ViBe Creative Dis- trict on these collaborative murals. This has been a wonderful organiza- tion to collaborate with and it's a great advocate of the arts. Making Murals Our gifted visual arts elementary students at Old Donation School worked individually to brainstorm and sketch ideas that symbolize the Virginia Beach community. As a class, students then voted on which designs they would like to combine into a pub - lic mural. Students worked in small g roups and had to communicate as they created—just like real artists. They worked collaboratively both to come up with the final designs and then to rec - reate them on wood paneling. The Unveiling It was wonderful to see my stu- dents' eyes light up as their com- pleted murals were unveiled. They w ere thrilled to have their own art as a semipermanent piece within the community. These murals are amongst the most fabulous in that location and are sure to stop pedes- trians and drivers in their tracks. All m urals in the ViBe District stay up for as long as they are intact and pre- sentable. Our mural really gives our s tudents representation in a commu- nity that relishes the arts.
