This lesson, taught to my com- bined seventh- and eighth-grade classes, started with an in-depth conversation about the social masks that we wear every day. I posed the question, "Do you act differently at school in the presence of teachers than you do with your friends?" The class erupted into laughter and com- ments. I then presented a slideshow of masks worn by a variety of people from different cultures. My goal was for stu- dents to get the idea that humans have used masks for thousands of years, as well as humor. SCHOOLARTSMAGAZINE.COM 33
