34 FEBRUARY 2017 SchoolArts fascinated with his Humument series, in which he takes pages from an old Victorian novel and highlights words and phrases to construct personal meaning. Then, using his recon- structed text, Phillips creates a work of art with traditional media on the original page. Choosing a Text I decided to take a book from the ninth-grade English curriculum, sub - stituting digital media for traditional, and instructed students to create their own personal interpretations, using the Humument series as their model. Students were intrigued and I could sense their excitement as I told them they would be the first class to create a Phillips-inspired work of art using digital media. The book I chose for us to work with was Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, with which they were all familiar.
