Frank Juarez H I G H S C H O O L E very fall semester, one of the projects I try to do while the weather is pleasant is a perspective unit with my art foundations students. We start with a discussion of what perspective is and what it looks like in real life. For many, this can be as abstract as look- ing at a painting by Jackson Pollock. Following our discussion, students take a pre-test on perspective terms to see what they remember from middle school. Based on the results, everyone is operating at a basic level of under- standing. One-Point Perspectives A typical lesson involves an introduc- tion and demonstration of one-point perspective, followed by a week spent in the hallway where students select their point of view and draw what they see. I walk the halls, going from one student to the next, making sure that they are following the proper guide - lines of creating their own drawings of the hallway. We then return to the classroom to review and take a mid- unit quiz. Two-Point Perspectives We spend the following week doing two-point perspective drawings of our school building's exterior. Students begin to see how their understand- ing of one-point perspective influ- ences the success of their two-point perspective drawings of Sheboygan North High School. Later, we return to the classroom to review and stu- dents take a post-test quiz. New Marks I wanted to create an additional level to this unit, so I decided to give stu- dents another experience in which they take ownership of their own learning in a group setting. My art foundations class has thirty- seven students in it. Part of being in a new school environment as fresh - men involves getting to know other students, especially within the same class, so I came up with an idea of doing a collaborative project involving electrical tape. I wanted the subject matter to be relevant to students, so we focused on our high school. I walked around the New Discoveries New Marks
