16 MAY 2016 SchoolArts Define Your Design I asked my 3D Design students to choose an everyday undervalued or overlooked material, such as paint swatches, playing cards, or muffin cups, and elevate or change the perception of the material through construction and pro - cess in order to create a wearable apparel design. I also set very clear and rigid constraints, an absolute necessity in the design process. Without limitations, students will feel lost and will consequently rely more on the teacher for help. Researching Material Requiring preliminary work provides a springboard for dis- covery, while also asking students to provide artifacts of their thinking, learning, and experimentation before pro- ceeding into the actual project. Requiring them to explore several alternatives and create material samples for each option also demonstrates that their process includes sub- stantial divergent and convergent thinking.
