F or the past ten years, I have been collaborating with my school's music teacher on numerous grade-level music programs and art shows for our students, their parents, and the community. The music teacher pro- duces and designs the program's theme, then students cre- ate projects that illustrate and enhance the theme's ideas in the artroom. We recently collaborated on a program inspired by Romare Bearden that incorporated language arts lessons into the classroom. Students studied the art of Bearden and his love for music, reading, and writing. It was a wonder- ful example of correlating concepts across disciplines as Bearden had done with his collages. Arts-Inspired Collages Each class designed and created collages based on a differ- ent theme. One class created a monochromatic composi- tion in "blues," while another used a variety of materials to emphasize music in some way. Another class used a combi - nation of materials to create self-portraits. The fourth class was challenged to create a cityscape, seascape, or landscape as a collage or relief sculpture. The project was an engaging exercise in recycling and a great way to use materials that had been collected over the years. Cityscape Murals As a culminating activity, each class collaborated on a cityscape mural inspired by Bearden's Thirties Midtown Sunset. The mural was displayed on the main bulletin board outside the cafeteria, where the program took place. This was just another visual way of bringing it all together. Students really enjoyed working together and taking own- ership of their mural designs as well as their individual accomplishments.
