30 SchoolArts Elementary Studio Lesson Jacob Lawrence Jacob Lawrence was an African-Amer- ican artist working in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. He was a painter of stories, often creating up to thirty images around a single theme. He used bright colors juxtaposed with to the curb, or the lady who walked her dog every day at two o'clock. Students filled these little handmade books with their observations of the world around them, just like the artist who we were studying, Jacob Law- rence, did. A ll week, first- through fourth-graders came up to me and slipped pocket-sized books into my hand. They pointed out how they had drawn the mail carrier going into the building across the street, the trash bins next A Neighborhood Tempest Neucollins of Their OWN Ginelle, grade one.
