So, I began the year committed to the cultivation of a higher level of all three—verve, experimentation, and risk-taking—and did so with an encouraging degree of success. How- ever, I wondered how I was going to Joanne Winkler's excellent week- long AP Institute graduate course at Goucher College. At some point during the course, a clearer under- standing of verve—or visual excite- ment—began to take shape. I also gained a better understanding of the T he AP Studio Art criteria, "verve" has always left me scratching my head. Con- sequently, I didn't stress it enough with my students. That is, until last summer when I attended The Accidental Betsy DiJulio Self-Portrait Noah Jackman.
