Elementary Studio Lesson D ino Days are coming and I am anticipating the date eagerly. Each year, second-grade students at Oakland Hebrew Day School (OHDS) transform themselves into paleontologists for weeks, studying and discovering all they can about dinosaurs. Art learning has been an integral component of the experi - ence since I came to OHDS eight years ago, but for some confounding reason, I have never been pleased with the process or the result of our dinosaur-related art. Having tried art experiences rang- ing from strictly representational to out-of-bounds crazy, nothing has made me feel as though I have offered my developing artist/paleon- tologists the right balance of science learning within their art exploration . . . until last year.
