Chicago, IL: Chicago Review Press, 2011. Illus., softcover, 144 pp., $17.95. Twenty-one creative projects bring history and the art of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Signac, Émile Bernard, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec to life for young readers. They will learn biographical information about the sensitive young van Gogh, who loved nature, reading, and spoke four languages. Readers learn not only how the post-impressionists' daring shapes, colors, and techniques distinguished their work from what was painted before, but also how the artists helped one another and whether or not they always got along. The text includes a time line, glossary, and reading list for further study. Supposedly, the cheese softening in the sun on a hot day was the reality that sparked Dalí's famous surrealist painting. This interactive book is filled with fun anecdotes like the above, useful information, quiz questions, and mini artistic challenges inspired by the featured artist. A helpful time line of important historical events runs across the top of many pages and shows when each painter was alive and working, along with other famous artists and musical contemporaries. Featured art terms such as chiaroscuro, varnish, and Renaissance, are clearly explained in a glossary. Francisco Goya, Paul Cézanne, Gustav Klimt, and Georgia O'Keeffe, are just a few of the artists represented, complete with colorful reproductions of their most famous work. This book is a worthwhile resource that is fun, interactive, well formatted, and easy to follow for both teachers and students. and reflections are as unique and varied as seashells. The book succeeds in its goal of demonstrating that people with Down syndrome can be talented artists and writers who defy categorization. One author beautifully explains how art was able to give voice to her sister who had lived so long in silence with Down syndrome. This sets the tone for the work that follows, which exemplifies the ability of individuals who have perceived limitations in spoken language to express themselves through art. The book features works from artists who range in age from fourteen to fifty-one. Examples of poems, stories, abstract art, figure art, still lifes, landscapes, sculptures, textile work, and collages are included. Brief biographies about the artists accompany each work. This book would be fascinating and inspirational to students of any age, making it a wonderful addition to the resource library of any teacher.
