close to the viewer, then color in the landscape with crayons. Painting Objects for the Mural While students are coloring their landscapes, call one table group at a time to the painting table to stencil objects onto contrasting construction paper. Be sure to tape the stencil to the construction paper to avoid slipping. Using tempera paints and sponges, stamp color onto the stencil. Do two or more stencils as time permits, then let the stencils dry overnight. Making a Mural Guide students in identifying colors and patterns used to depict the animals and objects in the story. Use markers to create patterns on the painted animals and objects. While students work on drawing the patterns, bring each group to the large black bulletin board paper to draw stars with white gel overwriter pens. Using glue sticks, apply glue to the back of the finished construction paper squares. Place each square onto another construction paper square of a contrasting color. This square should be ½" (1.25 cm) larger than the original square. When the drawings are finished, guide students in placing the squares in a grid-like fashion onto the black bulletin board paper. Place words students have written on the animals. Assessment and Critique Throughout the lessons, ask students to review what they are learning.
