Sakura Zentangle Apprentice Pack sakuraofamerica.com Teacher: Emily Taylor, Summer Program Art Instructor, Brookline, Massachusetts Level: Ages 5–12 The Lesson: I used Sakura's Zentangle Classroom Apprentice Pack during my summer sessions with a group of mixed ages and skill levels. Going into this lesson, I wasn't quite sure how Zentangle was any different from simply doodling. I was also concerned about using unfamiliar materials with students of such varied ages. My worries vanished when I witnessed how much my students enjoyed creating Zentangles. Because the Apprentice Pack comes with paper tiles, sketching pencils, and drawing pens, my students thought the activity was a special treat and were very excited about the new materials. I even let each student keep an extra tile and drawing pen to take home and keep practicing. Personally, I find the "zen" in the Zentangles name to be very accurate. As someone who sketches and paints almost every day, the Zentangle philosophy of drawing with intention when creating your patterns is very therapeutic. Zentangles are now a part of my own creative warm-up process. I have also since purchased a supplementary Zentangle instructional book. schoolartsonline.com 11
