Working with Denatured Alcohol Denatured alcohol is flammable and poisonous to drink, just like rubbing alcohol. Do not leave open containers unattended. Pour onl mall amount at a time and use cotton swabs to spread it. It is not poisonous to touch, but will dr our skin, s ou ma nt to appl ome lotion t our hands afte ou are finished. If using larger amounts of denatured alcohol, the vapors can be irritating to breathe; however, m tudents onl oured a ver mall amount, so the smell was not an issue.
