We looked at the form of technology they were using to take the picture—pos - sibly using a selfie stick, as well as the style of phone they were using. Illustrating Selfies Students began illustrating their scenes and envisioned how it might look with them taking a selfie with their artist. I asked them to consider what kind of expression they might make and what was going on in the scene. Students had fun making duck faces and blue steel faces in the mir- ror and capturing them with their phones. Who would have known that a selfie could be considered art? On Completion After completion of the drawings, students presented their work and information about their artist to the class. They took notes about each artist as each student presented their findings. I thought this was a much more useful way of presenting artists than me standing in front of the class and lecturing on art history. Students connected through humor and rela- tionships to the artists. This assignment allowed students to gain connections and understand- ing of artists through a simple selfie portrait. Students had fun with art history! Who knew a selfie could be turned into something more educa- tional?
